Cooling System Reservoir

I designed a combined pump housing and cooling reservoir for our system to manage coolant expansion, remove entrained air, and ensure a stable inlet pressure to the pump to reduce the risk of cavitation. The component needed to integrate smoothly with the rest of the cooling loop, withstand varying operating temperatures, and be manufacturable within our team’s capabilities.

This project allowed me to develop the following areas:

  • Design for additive manufacturing
    • Wall thickness
    • Print orientation
    • Minimized supports/post processing
  • Seal calculations and sealing strategies
    • O-ring sizing
    • Compression ratios
    • Sealing tolerances
  • Parametric CAD design in SolidWorks
    • Parametric modelling to adapt to volume, inlet and mounting changes + quick prototype iterations
  • Knowledge of fluid systems and liquid pumps
    • Understanding NPSH
    • Priming + cavitation challenges
    • Air separation + evacuation.
